In the spring of 2009, staff at the Peace Development Fund began having conversations with several donors about the vacuum created in the Bay Area social justice philanthropic community by the fall of the Vanguard Foundation.Around the same time, the Agape Foundation closed its doors (and joined PDF as another Community Advised Fund), and the San Francisco Foundation closed its Social Justice Program.
What emerged from those conversations was a clear need for a new space to engage Bay Area donors and ensure that small, grassroots social justice organizations in the Bay Area were still getting the resources necessary to continue their work.
In addition to a commitment to create this new space was a commitment to some of the longstanding principles that were shared by PDF, Vanguard, many of its donors and grassroots organizers: building trusting, authentic relationships and sharing power and responsibility across the board.
With a series of house parties and meetings that year, PDF, our donors and some organizers started the Bay Area Community Advised Fund, a community-advised fund housed at the Peace Development Fund.
