WAM! was launched as a project of the Center for New Words (CNW) in 2004 in response to the exclusion of women's voices from American news media post-9/11. Originally conceived as a day-long symposium, the response to our initial invitation was overwhelming. Women from around the country jumped at the chance to address the urgent need for equity in media.
In the six years since that initial gathering of 100 women, the number of WAM! conference participants has grown exponentially. The 2009 conference included more than 600 participants from 29 states and 9 countries. We communicate year-round via an active listserv and take action on various media issues. One recent success: in 2009 WAM! forced the Washington Post to revise its editorial policy after WAM!mers publicly protested yet another sexist slur aimed at Hillary Clinton.
In 2009, CNW decided the time had come to dissolve the organization. In response, WAM! decided to launch itself as an independent national organization.
WAM! is building a “New Girls’ Network” through which members help each other to place op-eds and articles; secure powerful media jobs; leverage new technology; hold the media accountable; produce and promote books, films and other projects; get stories told about our lives and work; and work to change the media structure.
By working to stop to create gender equality in the media, WAM! is moving forward a movement for peace and social justice. The Peace Development Fund is proud to be able to support the work of WAM! through our Fiscal Sponsorship Program.
