Reframing Philanthropy: First Installment Equitable Philanthropy

October 3, 2023 @ 12:00 pm 1:00 pm

We invite you to join us for a new series that is informative and interactive offering opportunities to engage, learn, and network with each other.  The series reframes philanthropy through a more diverse, equitable, and inclusive lens to foster new ways of being catalysts for social change in our own communities and around the country.  Each session will be held virtually and will include expert speakers, knowledge sharing, and discussion. The series is open to donors, grantees, professional advisors, and staff and board members of organizations impacted by social justice philanthropy.  We hope you will find the series thought-provoking, challenging, and inspiring.

Our speaker for the first installment of the series, Equitable Philanthropy, is Lisa Owens.

Lisa Owens is the Executive Director of the Hyams Foundation, which supports Massachusetts based racial justice organizing groups working to build power and transform systems.  She sees her role as organizing funders to make consistent, meaningful investments in building movement infrastructure and in providing multi-year general operating support of grassroots organizing groups and coalitions.

Lisa brings over 30 years of experience building grassroots organizations.  She began organizing in the mid 1980s as a young person in the Roxbury based community organization, Free My People, which fought against systemic racism in the police department and in the schools and stood in solidarity with the South African people’s liberation movement. Since then, she has maintained her commitment to Black liberation and grassroots power building in communities of color.
